ICE Abducts Des Moines Public School's Superintendent -- This Explains a Lot About "Law And Order" in Modern America...
Dr Ian Roberts is the superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools. He is one of the highest paid, highest profile public employees in the whole state of Iowa.
On Friday he was abducted by ICE, and his treatment says a lot about "law and order" in modern America:
It's not about who breaks the law, but who is prosecuted.
ICE had information ready to go to paint Dr Roberts as a "criminal alien."
The weapons charges ICE reference was not a felony, or even really weapons charges. In 2020, Dr Roberts was returning from a hunting trip in Pennsylvania and he was cited for having an unsecured weapon in the front of his vehicle. Though he had a license for the hunting rifle, Pennsylvania requires the gun be secured, even in your own vehicle.
Not only is that not a crime in a state like Iowa, Iowa is so pro-gun, Dr Roberts (or anyone) could walk around a coffee shop with a loaded gun slung over his shoulder!
Heck, Iowa's governor proposed arming all teachers in school to keep students safe!
But if you think that having some dirt on Dr Roberts makes ICE a well-oiled law enforcement machine: think again!
Hours after his arrest, ICE had his location listed as Council Bluffs in Pottawattamie County. However, Council Bluffs police said Dr Roberts wasn't there. And it turned out, Dr Roberts was being held 2 hours north in Woodbury County, Iowa -- nearly 4 hours away from Des Moines.
The other "criminal" element ICE points to is that Dr Roberts had an "order of removal" from 2024.
But as we've seen in many other cases recently: many undocumented workers have orders of removal in their files, but also temporary legal stays issued by judges. So in their eyes, they were working here legally while they worked their way through our Balkanized immigration system.
You would think that if this were a paperwork issue, ICE could have just contact Dr Roberts lawyers or DMPS.
Why forcibly abduct him from his home city?
Because ICE isn't here to enforce laws, it's here to send messages and to terrorize.
If we were to go after everyone with dubious immigration records, the list would be long and distinguished!
That says less about the immigrants than it does about America's immigration system.
And the Catch-22 of not wanting immigrants but desperately needing immigrants has led the Trump administration to relax enforcement on some immigrant workers -- usually those in well-connected industries, or Trump's own companies.
Though a dedicated, hardworking member of our community, Dr Roberts isn't a hotel worker at Trump International, he is a public school servant -- that makes him a target.
We are not applying the law evenly across the country, we are targeting certain individuals.
And if you think the US is really worried about corruption and the rule of law, you'd have to overlook leadership of the very government agency that is persecuting Dr Roberts.
Graft and corruption are rampant even in DHS.
We are not asking for special treatment for Dr Roberts -- the kind of special treatment afforded to Trump administration appointees.
We are asking for due process that he has earned through his years of service to his communities.
He hasn't been afforded a basic standard of legal fairness, he has been subject to the new What-Trump-Says Legal Code we are suffering in.
